From there, Farewell Gap Trail travels to the right for 2.7 miles one-way. To the left, Franklin Lakes Trail travels 2.6 miles one-way to a pair of lakes. Explore the rainbow-colored rocks that attracted miners to this area in the 1870s along Franklin Lakes Trail or see evidence of these miners as you view mineshafts (from a safe distance) along Farewell Gap Trail.<br /> <br /> The first campsite along the trail is 4 miles from the trailhead at the junction between Franklin Lakes and Farewell Gap Trails. Although each of these hikes can be done as a day trip, many backpackers make Franklin Lakes their first stop on their way over Franklin Pass to Rattlesnake Canyon, the Kern Canyon and Mt. Whitney.</p>
