About Big Branch Wilderness

Big Branch Wilderness is a 6,625-acre federally protected wilderness area in Vermont, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited. The area is defined by non-motorized recreation—expect to travel on foot, camp in designated spots, and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the wilderness character.

Access is typically from nearby trailheads, though roads do not penetrate the wilderness itself. Summer and early fall are the most practical seasons for visiting. Winter conditions can make travel difficult and require specialized skills. Plan for self-sufficiency: bring maps, water treatment, and appropriate gear for backcountry camping. The wilderness rules are simple but firm: no motors, no bikes or other mechanized travel, and no permanent structures. This is working backcountry, not a day-use park.
