About Beaver Basin Wilderness Area

Beaver Basin Wilderness Area is an 11,748-acre federally protected wilderness in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, managed by the National Park Service. The area offers backcountry hiking and backpacking through primitive terrain where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and developed roads are prohibited. Visitors come here to experience solitude and untrammeled backcountry in a non-motorized setting.

Access requires foot travel only. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp only at established sites where permitted, and respect the area's protected status. Winter conditions can be severe, making spring through fall the practical visiting window. This is a true wilderness experience: come prepared for self-sufficiency, unpredictable weather, and genuine isolation.
