Bay Creek Wilderness

Bay Creek Wilderness is a 2,760-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. It offers a primitive backcountry experience in a region where true wilderness is scarce, with opportunities for hiking and backpacking away from roads and mechanical intrusion.

As a federally protected Wilderness, the area operates under strict non-motorized rules: no vehicles, no mountain bikes, no chainsaws or mechanized tools. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces, and respect the landscape's fragility. Access is foot-traffic only, and the experience centers on solitude and self-reliance rather than maintained trails or facilities.

Visitors should expect a modest, intimate landscape typical of southern Illinois, without dramatic peaks or alpine terrain. Spring through fall are the primary seasons for visiting; winter conditions can be challenging in this region.
