This Forest Service area 3 miles (4.8 kilometer) north of Grant Grove is part of the Converse Basin sequoia grove. From Cherry Gap, you can take roads to the Chicago Stump. Once the General Noble Tree, it was cut into pieces in 1897, shipped to the Chicago World's Fair, and reassembled. This effort to share the huge size of these trees with the world was met with disbelief; it became known as the "California Hoax." Go 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometer) on Forest Road 13S03 to the Chicago Stump trailhead (do not drive past here). Walk the 0.5-mile loop (0.8 kilometer) to the stump along a meadow ringed by young sequoias.

This road is often closed. Please check the Forest Service's website to determine whether this road is open.
