About Wehrum

Wehrum is a ghost town tucked into the woods of Buffington Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. It existed as a coal mining company town during the early twentieth century, built entirely around a single mine. When that mine closed in 1929, the community began to unravel, and by 1934 the last known residents had departed.

Very little survives above ground today. Visitors who venture into the area will find faint outlines of former streets and scattered building foundations half-hidden beneath the forest canopy — quiet, atmospheric traces of a town that once sustained a working population. Wehrum is now part of Pennsylvania's Ghost Town Trail, making it accessible to those interested in industrial history and forgotten landscapes.

Because the remains are subtle and forest-covered, the experience rewards patient exploration rather than dramatic sightseeing. Late spring through early fall offers the most comfortable visiting conditions, though leaf-off seasons in early spring or late autumn can actually make foundations and street remnants easier to spot through the bare understory.
