Vienna

Vienna is an unincorporated community in Pickens County, Alabama, sitting about six miles from the Mississippi border. For roughly three decades before the Civil War it functioned as a busy river port along the eastern bank of the Tombigbee River, making it one of the more commercially active spots on the county's southwestern edge. The war's end brought railroad construction through Pickens County, and the new line bypassed Vienna entirely, draining away the trade that had sustained it. By 1917 the post office had shut its doors, erasing the town's last official standing.

Today Vienna exists in name only. Visitors come to a quiet rural setting near the Tombigbee rather than any preserved townsite, and the experience is one of atmosphere and historical imagination more than physical remains. Photography and scenic driving along the river corridor are the most realistic reasons to make the trip.
