Sumica

Sumica was a mill town and logging settlement in Polk County, Florida, operating a company store where residents paid for goods using scrip — currency issued by the company itself in denominations of 5 and 25 cents. The self-contained nature of that economy gives a sense of how isolated and company-dependent daily life here once was.

Today Sumica is a ghost town. A historical marker off State Route 60 commemorates the site, and the Southwest Florida Water Management District maintains a preserve in the area that carries the settlement's name. There are no surviving townsite structures described in the record, so visitors should expect a natural landscape rather than physical ruins.
