Sulzer

Sulzer is a ghost town on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, situated along the shore of Hetta Inlet. Its origins trace to a copper mine founded by William Sulzer, which was subsequently operated by the Alaska Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company under the name the Jumbo Mine. During its active years — 1907 to 1918 — the Jumbo Mine ranked among the largest copper producers in Alaska before eventually shutting down and leaving the community to fade.

Visitors today will find a remote, atmospheric site shaped by its industrial past. Access to Prince of Wales Island requires a ferry or floatplane, and the surrounding terrain is rugged Southeast Alaska wilderness. Given how little documented infrastructure or formal access exists at the site itself, those drawn here should come prepared for an exploratory, self-sufficient experience rather than a developed destination.
