About St. Deroin

St. Deroin is a ghost town in Richardson County, Nebraska, situated near the Missouri River below river bluffs. Formally chartered in 1854, the community built its early identity around a ferry crossing over the Missouri that remained in operation for more than three decades before the river shifted course and rendered it obsolete. Commerce continued to drain away after a railroad spur bypassed the town entirely.

What remains today reflects a slow unraveling rather than a single collapse. The school was relocated up to the river bluff when flooding threatened its original site, and that same elevated ground became home to the town cemetery. Visitors come primarily to explore this remnant landscape — the bluff setting, the old cemetery, and the quiet sense of a place the river and the railroad left behind.
