Sewell

Sewell is a ghost town in Fayette County, West Virginia, sitting along the New River about six miles southeast of Fayetteville. Its story is rooted in a substantial coking operation that once ran 193 beehive coke ovens here, active from the late nineteenth century through the early-to-mid twentieth century. The Mann's Creek Railroad served the site from 1886 until 1955, connecting the operation to the broader rail network.

Today Sewell is an unincorporated community where visitors come largely to absorb the industrial heritage left behind. The remnants of the coke ovens and the riverside setting make it a quiet destination for history-minded travelers and photographers drawn to the weathered landscape.
