Rocky Bar

Tucked into Elmore County, Idaho, Rocky Bar is a ghost town with a surprisingly significant past. Gold drew settlers here, and by the late 1800s the community had grown to more than 2,500 residents — a substantial presence for such a remote location. Its political standing matched its size: Rocky Bar served as the county seat of Alturas County from 1864 to 1882, and when Elmore County was established in 1889, Rocky Bar held that seat as well.

Today the town is a quiet remnant of that era. Visitors willing to make the journey will find scattered historic remains set against rugged Idaho backcountry. Reaching Rocky Bar requires a capable 4x4 vehicle — the access road is not suitable for standard passenger cars, and conditions can deteriorate quickly outside the summer and early fall window. Snow typically closes the route from late fall through early spring, making June through September the realistic window for a visit.
