About Relay

Relay, Maryland began as a railroad junction on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, situated roughly nine miles west of Baltimore. It grew into one of the line's busiest stops — second only to Baltimore itself — and a small community took shape around that traffic, complete with a general store, a school, and a volunteer fire company.

Today the area survives as a historic district within Halethorpe, Maryland. Visitors can explore the Thomas Viaduct, a notable landmark from the railroad era, and access the surrounding Patapsco Valley State Park. There is no ghost town to wander in the traditional sense, but the historic district and its setting offer genuine context for the site's significance as a once-vital rail hub.
