About Redfern

Redfern is a ghost town tied to the Black Hills Gold Rush, sitting at the eastern base of Redfern Mountain, which rises to 6,076 feet in Pennington County, South Dakota. The townsite and the mountain share a name, and both are reachable via the gravel road that runs toward Mystic, South Dakota. The old community sat close to Tigerville, another historic settlement roughly a mile away, and the Mystic Road itself branches off Deerfield Road not far from Hill City.

Visitors today will find a quiet, rural setting rather than standing structures or a developed site. The gravel road access means a high-clearance vehicle is helpful, and conditions can deteriorate in wet weather or winter months. This is a place for those drawn to history and open landscape rather than formal amenities.
