New Fork

New Fork is a ghost town in Sublette County, Wyoming, situated near Boulder along what was once the Lander cutoff of the Oregon Trail. Two Danish immigrants, John Vible and Louis Broderson, who had come to the United States in 1884, founded the settlement in 1888 by establishing a store at this location. It stands as one of the earliest communities to take root in the upper Green River valley.

Over the following two decades a small town grew up around that original store. By 1910 Vible had added a dance hall he named The Valhalla, and the settlement reached its modest peak around that era before eventually fading into the ghost town it is today.

Visitors come primarily for the historical character of the site and its connection to the Oregon Trail corridor. As with most ghost towns, what remains is spare, and the experience is largely about the open landscape and the sense of place. Access is most reliable from late spring through early fall; Wyoming winters in this part of the state can make roads difficult or impassable.
