About Maitland
Maitland is a ghost town in Lawrence County, South Dakota, known at various points by the name Garden City and occasionally misspelled as Midland. It grew as a mining community during the Black Hills Gold Rush before being fully abandoned by around 1915.
Visitors today will find little more than the remnants of a once-active settlement set in the South Dakota landscape. As with most ghost towns of its era, the site offers a quiet glimpse into a short-lived boom-and-bust past rather than any developed attraction or interpretive amenity.
