Kinzua

Tucked in Wheeler County, Oregon, just east of Fossil, Kinzua operated as a company town for roughly five decades before closing in 1978. Its origins date to 1927, making it a relatively short-lived but self-contained community tied to a single corporate enterprise.

Today Kinzua is a ghost town — a former townsite where visitors can explore what remains of that mid-twentieth-century settlement. It shares a mailing address with Fossil, the nearest active community, which gives a practical sense of just how remote and lightly populated this corner of Oregon remains.

Access is straightforward from Fossil, sitting directly to the west. As with much of Wheeler County, winter weather can complicate travel on rural roads, so late spring through early fall is the most reliable window for a visit. There are no developed visitor facilities here — this is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path stop best suited to history-minded travelers and photographers drawn to the atmosphere of an abandoned Oregon townsite.
