Kay Moor

Kaymoor — sometimes spelled Kay Moor — is an abandoned coal town, coal mine, and coal-processing facility tucked into the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The settlement once occupied Kaymoor Bottom at the floor of the gorge, while the mine portal sat roughly 560 feet higher on Sewell Bench in the gorge wall, with the two levels connected by conveyors.

Visitors today find a genuine industrial ghost town set against the dramatic backdrop of the gorge. The remains span two distinct elevations, giving a clear picture of how the operation was organized vertically across the terrain. It is a rare place where the physical relationship between a coal town and its mine infrastructure is still legible on the landscape.

Access is tied to the gorge environment, which means steep terrain and variable conditions. Spring and summer offer the most forgiving visits, while winter months bring genuine hazards on the slopes of the gorge. Come prepared for rugged footing and limited facilities — this is a wild, largely unimproved historic site, not a maintained attraction.
