About Hopefield

Hopefield was a small riverside community situated along the Mississippi River in Crittenden County, Arkansas, positioned at or near what is today the city of West Memphis. Its location made it a natural ferry crossing point connecting Arkansas to Memphis, Tennessee, directly across the river.

The town gained regional significance as a stop on an east-west rail corridor developed by the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad, a line that later became part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway's mainline network. During the Civil War, Union General Stephen Hurlbut ordered the town burned as a measure against Confederate activity, a fate that contributed to its eventual disappearance.

Today Hopefield exists as a ghost town absorbed into the modern footprint of West Memphis. Visitors will find no preserved townsite or marked historic remains — this is a place whose story is best appreciated through its context along the Mississippi riverfront and the broader history of the Memphis crossing.
