Granite

Tucked three miles east of Philipsburg in Granite County, Montana, Granite is a ghost town that once flourished on silver mining before falling completely silent. Today not a single resident remains, and the site exists as a relic of a boom-and-bust era that played out across the American West in the late nineteenth century.

Montana preserves two structures here as Granite Ghost Town State Park: the mine superintendent's house and the ruins of the union hall. These remnants give visitors a tangible sense of the community that once operated here, even as nature gradually reclaims the surrounding landscape.

Reaching Granite requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle, so plan accordingly and check road conditions before heading out. The site is best suited to warm-weather visits, with summer and early fall offering the most reliable access. Winter months bring genuine hazards, and the road can be impassable in deep snow.
