Gilmer

Gilmer is a ghost town in Klickitat County, Washington, named for George W. Gilmer, an early settler who also served as postmaster. Its identity was built around a working ranch where horses and cattle were raised, and it served as a key overland staging point for goods moving from the Columbia River to towns and mines deeper in Klickitat County.

Beyond the ranch operation, Gilmer supported a post office and a school for a period during the late nineteenth century, giving it the brief character of a small but functioning rural community. Travelers and settlers passed through regularly, reinforcing its role as a waypoint rather than a destination in its own right.

Today Gilmer is largely forgotten on the landscape. Visitors drawn to Washington ghost towns may find the rural setting and surrounding Klickitat County countryside worth exploring, but should expect little in the way of preserved structures or formal access. This is a place for historically curious travelers comfortable with open country and limited infrastructure.
