About Gibbs City

Gibbs City is a ghost town in Iron County, Michigan, tucked within the Ottawa National Forest. The settlement has roots in the late 19th century, when it was established under the name Atkinson around a sawmill on the Paint River. That early community eventually declined, but a second chapter followed when R. F. Gibbs erected a new sawmill and the population climbed to more than 200 residents — enough to earn the place its current name.

A 1921 fire destroyed the mill and triggered a swift abandonment. A post office kept the address alive until 1952, but little commercial or residential life remained after the mill was lost. Today Gibbs City is a quiet forest clearing rather than a functioning community, and visitors come primarily for the historical curiosity and the surrounding national forest setting.

Access is practical in the warmer months, though the remote Ottawa National Forest location means roads can be rough and services are nonexistent on site. Winter brings heavy snowfall to this part of Michigan, making visits from December through March genuinely difficult. Late spring through early fall offers the most reliable window for exploration.
