About Galena

Galena is a ghost town in Grant County, Oregon, situated along the Middle Fork John Day River within the Malheur National Forest, roughly 20 miles from Austin Junction in the Blue Mountains. The community began as a gold mining camp and today is considered fully abandoned.

Visitors come for the historic atmosphere and the scenic river and forest setting. Given its remote location deep in the Blue Mountains, access is best attempted in the warmer months, as mountain winters make roads difficult or impassable.
