Fremont

Fremont is a ghost town in Lake County, Oregon, where a small rural community once took root in the early twentieth century. Homesteaders began settling the area around 1905, and growth came quickly enough that a local post office opened by 1908. That momentum proved short-lived: a severe drought set in by around 1915, drying up surface water and dropping the water table until the community could no longer sustain itself, and the population fell away rapidly.

Nothing standing remains at the site today — no structures have survived — and the population is zero. Visitors come away with an open, largely undeveloped landscape rather than photogenic ruins. The experience is one of quiet historical reflection on how quickly an Oregon high-desert community could rise and disappear when water gave out.
