Florence

Florence is a ghost town in Idaho County, Idaho, sitting at 6,080 feet in remote north-central Idaho, roughly 14 air miles east-northeast of present-day Riggins. Its origins trace to the winter of 1861, when it was established as a mining camp. Washington Territory almost simultaneously created Idaho County on December 20, 1861, anticipating the influx of population that followed — more than 9,000 people arrived within the first year, and Florence quickly became the county seat.

Given its high elevation and remote setting, Florence is a challenging destination to reach outside of summer and early fall. Visitors should expect limited or no services and plan accordingly. The site appeals primarily to those interested in Idaho's early settlement history and the rugged landscape that surrounds it.
