About Firesteel
Firesteel is a ghost town located within the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in Dewey County, South Dakota. In the early twentieth century it functioned as a notable coal mining community, giving it a brief but defined economic identity in the region. It is unincorporated and not tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau, meaning no official population figures exist for it today.
Visitors should arrive with modest expectations. As with most ghost towns of its era, little infrastructure is likely to remain, and the draw is primarily historical curiosity and the surrounding landscape. Access to reservation land may require awareness of tribal regulations before visiting.
