About Ferguson

Tucked into Orangeburg County, South Carolina, Ferguson is a ghost town that grew out of the late-nineteenth-century lumber trade. The settlement took shape as a company town after Chicago businessmen Francis Beidler and Benjamin F. Ferguson launched the Santee River Cypress Lumber Company in 1881. Their enterprise targeted the old-growth bald cypress standing in the blackwater river wetlands of central South Carolina, eventually controlling roughly 165,000 acres of timberland. The town itself was built to house and supply the workers who kept that operation running.

Today Ferguson survives as a ghost town, and visitors should arrive with modest expectations. The surrounding wetland landscape retains the atmospheric character that made this corner of South Carolina so valuable to lumber interests, and the history embedded in the site offers a quiet window into the industrial scale of early resource extraction in the region. Access and on-the-ground remains are limited, so the experience suits those drawn to historical curiosity and natural scenery rather than developed amenities.
