Dubuque

Dubuque was a White River community in Boone County, Arkansas, whose roots go back to 1814. Its position at a river crossing and the draw of nearby lead mines gave it strategic importance during the Civil War, and the town was destroyed in the fighting. Attempts to rebuild after the war fell short, and Dubuque had effectively ceased to exist by 1870.

Today, the site lies beneath the waters of Bull Shoals Lake. There is nothing left to walk through or explore on land — the lake permanently covers what once stood here. Visitors interested in the history can experience the area by water, and the lake itself offers boating and fishing, but anyone hoping to find physical remnants of Dubuque will come away empty-handed.
