Dixie

Dixie is a ghost town in Grant County, Oregon, that began as a railway station on the Sumpter Valley Railway near Dixie Summit. The station took its name from Dixie Creek, a nearby tributary of the John Day River close to Prairie City. That creek earned its name from the many gold miners who had traveled from the American South to work claims along its banks.

Visitors today will find little more than the historic setting and the surrounding landscape. The sparse remains and the story behind the name — a southern mining community transplanted to the Oregon interior — are the main draws for those passing through.
