Custer

Perched at 6,470 feet in Custer County, Idaho, the ghost town of Custer sits along Yankee Fork Road within the Challis National Forest, southwest of the city of Challis. Founded in 1877, the community grew up around gold and had its run before the boom faded and residents moved on.

Visitors today arrive to a quiet, high-elevation setting where remnants of that earlier era remain visible against a national forest backdrop. The site is reachable by passenger car, making it accessible without a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Because of the elevation, the access road and surrounding terrain are best visited in the warmer months, roughly late spring through early fall. Winter conditions at over a mile high can make the route hazardous or impassable, so plan accordingly.
