About Cooney

Tucked in Catron County, New Mexico, Cooney is a ghost town that grew up around the pursuit of gold and silver in the nearby Mogollon Mountains. The settlement drew prospectors hoping to strike it rich, and for a time it had the energy of a working mountain community.

Today the town is long abandoned, leaving visitors with little more than the quiet landscape east of Alma. Those drawn to ghost towns will appreciate the remote, rugged setting, though the tangible remains are sparse.
