About Congress Mine

Perched on the southeastern slope of the Date Creek Mountains at roughly 3,000 feet elevation, Congress Mine is the gold mine at the heart of the ghost town of Congress, Arizona. Situated about 18 miles north-northeast of Wickenburg in Yavapai County, the site earned a notable place in Arizona mining history as one of the state's most productive gold mines.

The nearest active community today is modern Congress — just four miles away — which grew from what was once a railroad station known as Congress Jct and later a post office called Martinez. That proximity makes the ghost town reasonably accessible for visitors curious about the region's gold-mining past.

Expect a historic industrial landscape rather than a manicured attraction. The elevation keeps temperatures somewhat moderate compared to the lower Sonoran Desert, but summers can still be intense this far south in Arizona. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the remnants of this once-significant mining operation.
