Cochise

Tucked into Cochise County, Arizona, this small unincorporated community traces its roots to the railroad era of the 1880s, when the Southern Pacific Railroad established it as a functional stop along its route. The town's purpose was practical: supplying coal and water to keep trains moving. At its height, roughly 3,000 people called it home, and it attracted a notable cast of frontier characters — among them Big Nose Kate, the well-known companion of Doc Holliday, who resided here in 1899.

Today the population has dwindled to around 50 residents, giving the place a quiet, time-worn atmosphere. Several historic locations remain within the town, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone drawn to Arizona's frontier past. Visitors should expect a lived-in but sparse community rather than a fully preserved ghost town — some history is visible, but this is not a curated historic site.
