About Coars Springs

Coars Springs, in Copiah County, Mississippi, holds the distinction of having served as the county's first seat of government in the early 1800s. What began as a functioning settlement with enough standing to anchor local governance eventually lost its footing when the railroad pushed through the region without stopping here, sealing the town's fate.

Today the site belongs to the forest. Vegetation has fully reclaimed the area in the 21st century, leaving little for visitors to see beyond the woods themselves. Anyone making the trip should expect a quiet, heavily overgrown landscape with no formal amenities or maintained access — more of a historically minded detour than a destination.
