About Climax

Perched at 11,341 feet on Fremont Pass along the Continental Divide in Lake County, Colorado, Climax was built around one of the largest molybdenum ore deposits ever discovered. It functioned at various points as a company town, a railroad station, and a post office — the post office operating in two separate stretches, from 1887 to 1898 and again from 1917 to 1974.

The town itself no longer exists. In 1962 the buildings were demolished to accommodate expansion of the Climax mine, now owned by Freeport-McMoRan. What drew people here also erased what they built, leaving the site defined far more by active industrial operations than by any preserved historic remnant.

Visitors curious about Climax will find a working mine landscape rather than a traditional ghost town with standing structures. The high elevation and Continental Divide location mean harsh winters and a short accessible season. Anyone making the trip should frame it as a scenic and historic drive through a dramatic mountain pass rather than an exploration of surviving townsite remains.
