Clifton

Clifton is a ghost town on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, born out of the copper-mining boom of the mid-1800s. The Pittsburgh and Boston Mining Company opened the Cliff mine in 1845 after copper was discovered there, and the community of Clifton took shape in Allouez Township to support that operation.

Today the remnants of Clifton sit between Calumet and Eagle Harbor, just off Cliff Drive near U.S. Route 41. A historical marker stands at the site, which is the primary draw for visitors. There is little left of the original settlement, so this is best approached as a brief stop for history enthusiasts rather than a full-day destination.
