Catoctin

Catoctin is a ghost town in Yavapai County, Arizona, tucked along the upper Hassayampa River about sixteen miles southeast of Prescott. It began as a small gold mining camp around 1902, and a post office opened there on December 29 of that year — a sign the settlement, however modest, had enough of a footprint to warrant official recognition. At its height, the camp housed roughly twenty people, and construction never went far beyond a handful of mining buildings and homes. The Catoctin and Climax mines operated in the vicinity. The post office closed on July 15, 1920, and the town faded not long after.

Visitors today should expect little in the way of standing structures. The remote river setting and the surrounding Yavapai County landscape are the main draw, making it a destination for those interested in Arizona's gold mining heritage and the quiet atmosphere of a place that has largely returned to nature. Access can be rough, and conditions along the upper Hassayampa corridor are best from spring through fall.
