Cain City

Cain City is a ghost town in Gillespie County, Texas, situated about 4 miles southeast of Fredericksburg. It came into existence in 1915 as a planned station stop along the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway. Charlie Cain, for whom the town was named, played a leading role in raising funds to support that railway venture.

The settlement never found lasting footing. Within roughly a decade of its founding, economic decline set in and the town faded. Today it stands as a quiet footnote in the Hill Country history of central Texas, with little infrastructure surviving from its brief active years.

Visitors drawn to ghost town exploration will find Cain City a modest destination — more a historical waypoint than a dramatic ruin site. The surrounding Gillespie County landscape is accessible year-round in mild conditions, though summer heat in central Texas can be intense. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for a visit.
