Burton

Burton was a small Rabun County, Georgia community that owed its existence to the Georgia Gold Rush, established in the first half of the 19th century near the confluence of Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River. The town took its name from Jeremiah Burton, a local figure who ran the post office and general store. The first gold discovery in Rabun County was made just north of town, where Moccasin Creek meets the Tallulah River.

Today, Burton exists only as a name on maps — the entire townsite lies beneath Lake Burton. Visitors will find no surface remains; the history is submerged. The lake setting itself draws sightseers and photographers, but anyone expecting visible ghost-town remnants will come away empty-handed.
