About Bourne

Bourne is a ghost town tucked into the Blue Mountains of Baker County, Oregon, sitting along Cracker Creek within the Wallowa–Whitman National Forest. The town traces its roots to gold mining, and when it was formally platted in 1902 it was already a boomtown drawing fortune-seekers to the area. That boom has long since faded, and Bourne is today considered a genuine ghost town.

Visitors come to take in what remains of a once-active gold mining community set against national forest land. The Cracker Creek drainage provides a scenic backdrop, and the site sits roughly 7 miles north of the small town of Sumpter, making it a natural add-on to any exploration of this corner of Oregon. Expect a quiet, rugged setting rather than a developed attraction — this is a place for history-minded travelers comfortable with backcountry conditions.

Access follows mountain roads that can be challenging or impassable in winter and early spring, so plan visits for the warmer months. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions for reaching the site.
