Bodie

Bodie is a genuine California ghost town sitting at 8,379 feet in the Bodie Hills of Mono County, roughly 12 miles east-southeast of Bridgeport. It rose from obscurity to a full-blown boom town in 1876 following the discovery of a profitable gold vein, and within three years had swelled to around 8,000 residents and some 2,000 structures — a remarkable concentration of humanity at high elevation in a short span of time.

What visitors find today is one of the best-preserved examples of a 19th-century boom-and-bust settlement in the American West. The remaining buildings, weathered but largely intact, give a vivid sense of the scale this community once reached. The high-desert setting amplifies the atmosphere — wide open, windswept, and remote.

The site is reachable by standard passenger car, making it accessible without a four-wheel-drive vehicle. That said, the elevation and location in the eastern Sierra Nevada foothills mean winters are severe, and the road and site are effectively off-limits for much of the cold-weather months. Summer and early fall are the practical window for a visit.
