About Big Canyon
Big Canyon was a small community in Murray County, Oklahoma, situated along the east bank of the Washita River about five miles southeast of Dougherty. Its existence was tied directly to a quarry operated by the Dolese Brothers, and the settlement existed largely to house and support workers tied to that operation. Whether the town carried any other names remains a matter of dispute.
Visitors today will find no active town. The most tangible remnant is the Big Canyon Cemetery, located near the original townsite, where workers who died during the quarry's operating years were buried by the company. The cemetery is the primary point of historical reference for anyone seeking to connect with what once existed here.
