Tucked away in Nye County, Nevada, Berlin Historic District preserves what remains of a mining-era ghost town whose story unfolded quickly and ended quietly. The Berlin Mine opened in 1896, and a town grew up around it the following year as part of the Union Mining District. Its name came from Germany, homeland of a portion of the prospectors who settled there.

Unlike the booming fortunes of contemporaries such as Tonopah and Goldfield, Berlin never reached those heights. The Panic of 1907 accelerated its decline, and by 1911 the town had been largely abandoned.

Visitors today encounter a genuine remnant of Nevada's mining past — a quiet, remote site where the setting itself tells most of the story. Photography and sightseeing are the draws here, along with the atmospheric stillness that only an honest ghost town delivers.
