Barron

Barron is a ghost town in Whatcom County, Washington, born out of the Skagit River gold rush of the late 19th century. It took shape as a boomtown meant to supply and support miners working near Slate Peak along Slate Creek in the eastern part of the county.

What makes Barron unusual among ghost towns is how much of it survived. Despite being abandoned not long after it was founded, the site still holds most of its original buildings and heavy equipment, giving visitors a remarkably intact window into a short-lived chapter of Washington history.

Access to this remote corner of eastern Whatcom County is best attempted in summer and early fall, when mountain roads are clear of snow. Winter conditions in this area can make the site effectively unreachable for months at a time.
