Avalon

Avalon is a ghost town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, built around a textiles mill established by Francis Henry Fries in the late 1800s. When the mill burned down in 1911, the community lost its reason for being, and most residents relocated to nearby Mayodan, leaving the area abandoned.

Visitors today will find little more than a quiet, largely empty landscape. With the mill gone and the population long since departed, there are no preserved structures or formal historic site amenities to speak of. It is a place for those drawn to the stillness of forgotten communities rather than dramatic ruins.
