Auraria

Auraria began as a gold mining camp in 1858, taking shape within what was then the Kansas Territory. It sat just below the point where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River, a location that gave early settlers practical access to water and travel routes.

Unlike many frontier camps that vanished entirely, Auraria endured. Today it exists as a neighborhood within Denver, Colorado, occupying the same ground it always has. Visitors are not walking into a ruined or abandoned townsite but into a living urban district — the historical significance lies in the continuity of place rather than in surviving ghost-town structures.
