About Audubon

Audubon is a ghost town in Wise County, Texas, named for the naturalist John Audubon. D.D. Shirey first settled and platted the site in 1865, and for a time the community functioned as a meaningful commercial hub in the area, supporting a Masonic lodge that operated from 1879 to 1886.

The town's decline came when the Fort Worth and Denver Railway bypassed it in 1883, cutting off the economic momentum that rail access would have provided. Within two decades, the post office had closed, and by 1904 Audubon had effectively ceased to function as a town. A Texas state historical marker was placed at the former townsite in 1970, and that marker is what visitors will realistically encounter today.

There are no known standing structures or developed facilities at the site. Anyone making the trip should expect a quiet rural setting with little on the ground beyond the historical marker itself — worthwhile for those interested in Texas frontier history, but not a destination with trails, amenities, or infrastructure.
