About Atlantic City

Atlantic City is a small census-designated place in Fremont County, Wyoming, with a recorded population of just 37 at the 2010 census. It sits in a gulch near South Pass in southwestern Wyoming, and its name reflects its position on the eastern side of the nearby Continental Divide.

The settlement was established in 1868 as a gold mining camp, growing out of a regional gold rush that had begun the previous year. When placer gold activity wound down in the early 1870s, the community shrank dramatically, leaving behind the character of a ghost town that has persisted to the present day.

Visitors arriving by passenger car will find a quiet, sparse remnant of a 19th-century mining settlement. The setting itself — a gulch near South Pass — provides historic atmosphere, and the site appeals to those interested in Wyoming's gold rush heritage. Expect a very small, low-key destination rather than a developed attraction. Summer months offer the most comfortable and reliable access to this high-elevation Wyoming location.
