ʻĀpua

ʻĀpua was an ancient Hawaiian fishing village situated on the southern coast of the Big Island, within the Puna district, at a modest elevation of roughly 59 feet above sea level. Its location along this remote coastline made it home to a small community that relied on the sea.

The village's story came to an abrupt end when a tsunami generated by the April 2, 1868 Hawaii earthquake swept through and destroyed it entirely. The settlement was never rebuilt or resettled, leaving ʻĀpua to fade into history as a ghost town claimed by the landscape.
