Andersonville

Andersonville was a South Carolina community in Anderson County that took root around 1800, named in honor of Revolutionary War veteran Robert Anderson. It developed into a functioning hub of textile production and trade, but a combination of recurring flood damage and being passed over by the railroad steadily wore the town down. Whatever remained was ultimately submerged when Lake Hartwell was constructed.

Today there is no townsite to walk through — the lake covers what was once Andersonville. Visitors curious about the area will find the water itself as the dominant feature, with Hartwell, Georgia, sitting across the lake to the southwest and Anderson, South Carolina, nearby to the north. The setting offers opportunities for lake-based recreation and photography, but anyone hoping to explore historic remnants on foot will find little to nothing above the waterline.
